How to draw the Sitting Hugging Knees pose

Think of the whole figure as an egg resting on its wide end. The buttocks and the soles of both feet carry the weight, the feet tucked in close to the seat, and everything else folds inward around that small base. The back rounds into one long C from the tailbone to the back of the skull, the arms wrap the shins and hold the legs against the chest, and the head drops forward toward the kneecaps. At only 80 cm to the head and 47 cm to the centre of mass, it is about as compact as a body gets while still sitting up.

Each camera angle hides something different. From the front, the knees and shins cover most of the torso, so the face peeks over the knees and the forearms cross in front of the legs; this is the strongest view for emotion. The side view is the one to study for construction, because it shows the curve of the spine, the short gap between heels and buttocks, and how the thighs press against the ribcage. The back view is almost pure rounded back with the shoulder blades spread wide, while the high angle turns the figure into a tight oval on the floor, ideal for showing someone small and alone in a large empty space.

Three things break the shape. A straight, upright back makes the person look like they are waiting at a bus stop rather than curling inward. Arms that hover in front of the legs without wrapping them lose the sense of holding on, so make the forearms visibly press around the shins. Feet planted far from the buttocks open the knees into a wide wedge and the compact silhouette disappears.

The face decides the mood: the same body can read as lonely, cold, thoughtful, comforted or simply tired. It suits grief scenes, a character waiting out a storm, someone sitting by a window or on a beach at dusk (only the floor plane is implied here, so add the setting yourself), and gesture studies of compression. In Edit this pose, try lifting the head so the chin rests on the knees for a quieter, thinking version, or turn it sideways so one cheek lies on the knee.
