How to draw the Sitting with Chin in Hand pose

Few poses tell a story with so little movement. Depending on the face you draw, the same seated lean says deep thought, a long wait, a daydream or plain boredom. The chair or bench is not shown in the image, so decide what the figure is sitting on before you commit to the pelvis height in your scene.

Three contact points hold everything together. The right elbow lands on the right knee, the loosely closed right hand meets the underside of the jaw, and the left forearm lies across the left thigh. Get those touches right and the rest follows. The jaw rests on the hand, so the fist sits below and slightly in front of the chin with the weight of the head pressing down into it; a head perched on top of the knuckles like a ball on a post is the most common error. Keep the fingers curled softly, not clenched.

Because the torso folds forward, the head ends up ahead of the hips, and the spine bends into one long curve from tailbone to skull. Check this in the side view: the line from hip to head should lean well past vertical, and the back should round rather than stay straight. A straight spine with a hand pressed to the face looks posed and uncomfortable. The front and three-quarter views show the right forearm standing almost upright between knee and chin while the left arm crosses the lap, a useful contrast of directions. The high angle is good overlap practice, since head, hand and knee stack on top of each other.

Reach for it when drawing a student in class, a character on a bus bench, a moody portrait or a comic panel where nothing is happening and that is the point. In Edit this pose, tip the head a few degrees toward the supporting hand to deepen the slump, or lift the left forearm off the thigh and rest that hand on the knee for a more attentive version.
