How to draw the Sitting on a Chair pose

Sitting on a chair is one of the most requested drawing references because people spend so much of their lives seated, yet the pose is full of foreshortening traps. In this version the figure sits upright on a seat of ordinary height: thighs level and parallel to the floor, knees bent at a right angle, shins vertical and both feet flat. The torso leans forward a touch, the forearms rest bent in front of the body and the hands relax over the lap.

The key to a convincing seated figure is the pelvis. When we sit, the pelvis rolls back slightly and the weight moves onto the sit bones, so the hip joint ends up level with the seat rather than above it. Draw the seat plane first, then place the pelvis box on it, and the legs will follow. Without a chair in the drawing, the same pose reads as floating, so always suggest the support even with a single line.

From the front, the thighs point straight at the viewer and shrink dramatically. Use overlapping contours: the knee cap overlaps the thigh, and the thigh overlaps the hip. Measure the thigh length against the shin from a side view before committing; in a front view the thigh may look half as long as the shin. A common error is drawing the knees too low, which makes the figure look as if it sits on the floor.

The shoulders stay level and relaxed, the neck rises straight from the ribcage and the head looks forward. Small changes have a big effect on mood: slump the spine for fatigue, lean back for confidence, or cross one leg over the other for a casual feel.

This pose works for office scenes, cafe illustrations, comics with dialogue and character turnarounds. Load it in the editor to try a low camera angle, which exaggerates the knees and makes the character feel taller and more imposing.
