How to draw the Sitting Leaning Back on Hands pose

Think of the figure as a tripod. The pelvis is one contact point and the two hands, set behind and slightly outside the hips, are the other two; the straight arms act as struts, so the torso reclines along a clear diagonal instead of sitting upright. One leg reaches forward flat along the floor, the other bends with its foot planted and the knee pointing up. The head drops back a little with the throat open, as though the character is soaking up sunlight. The contrast between one long leg and one folded leg keeps the drawing from looking like a diagram.

Getting the arms right matters most. The hands land behind the hips, fingers usually pointing back or out, and the shoulders rise toward the ears as they take weight. Move the hands beside the hips and the torso has to come upright, so the lean disappears. The side view, with the figure facing left, is the clearest reference for the recline angle and for the straight line from shoulder to wrist. The front view foreshortens the extended leg heavily, making the foot look large and the shin short, so use it to practise that compression. From behind, the arms and spine form a triangle, and the high angle shows how the raised knee overlaps the stretched leg.

Common slips: both legs drawn the same, which looks stiff; elbows bent so the figure seems to sink; the head held level, which loses the lazy mood; and a torso so upright that the hands no longer carry any weight.

Picnics, beaches, park lawns, a festival crowd or a quiet rooftop scene all fit. The ground, blanket or sand is not shown, so put in a horizon or grass line yourself. In the editor, swap which leg is raised, or let the raised knee fall outward to make the whole pose looser.
