How to draw the Legs Out, Leaning Back pose

three-quarter view
side view
back view
high-angle view
The whole body tilts as a single plank from the pelvis to the crown. The legs lie straight and parallel, heels down and toes up. From the seat the torso tips back a moderate twenty-odd degrees past vertical without folding at the waist or arching, so hips, ribs, shoulders and head line up on one diagonal. Two straight arms angle down and outward to palms set wide and a little behind the hips, the hands taking a real share of the weight. Despite the recline, the head does not drop back: the neck flexes just enough to keep the face level, looking down the length of the legs toward the toes. That level gaze stops the pose from reading as sunbathing.
The side view from the figure's left tells the story best: an obtuse angle between leg line and trunk line, with the near arm as a third straight line closing it into a narrow triangle against the floor. Measure that recline angle before anything else, since a few degrees either way changes the mood. The back view shows how wide the hands are set, wider than the shoulders. From the front the legs foreshorten to a short wedge and the face looks straight at the camera over the toes. The low angle pushes the soles toward the lens.
More on angles and common mistakes
Watch for three slips. A sagging middle, where the belly drops and the chest caves, breaks the plank. Elbows that soften make the figure look tired or about to lie down. And letting the head fall back changes the intent from watching to resting. Compare it with an upright seat on the same legs: here the hands sit behind the line of the shoulders, not under them. The wooden figure has no floor, mat or towel; add whatever the scene needs.
It is useful for dock, poolside and beach scenes, a character watching a game or a fire from the ground, and studies of long foreshortened limbs. In Edit this pose, bend one knee until its foot is flat to break the symmetry and give the lower half a second shape.
