Nearly all the length of this straddle sitting pose runs along the floor. The legs open to a right angle or a little more, knees straight and toes pointed, so each leg becomes a single long cylinder from hip to tip. The sitting bones carry most of the weight, while both arms reach straight down behind the pelvis with the palms flat, adding two contacts a hand-width behind the hips. That bracing lets the trunk recline a few degrees and the sternum rise. The head drops back and turns slightly to one side, gaze aimed upward.

Foreshortening is the main drawing problem. In the three-quarter and low views the near leg rushes toward the viewer and shortens sharply while the far leg stays close to full length; keep the knee and ankle landmarks evenly spaced along each leg so neither seems to bend. The side view from the figure's left hides one leg behind the other and shows the slope of the arms and the backward tilt of the head most clearly. The high angle reveals the whole V and is the best view for checking that both legs open by the same amount.

More on angles and common mistakes

Common mistakes include drawing the legs too short because the hip joints are buried in the pelvis block, flexing the feet when the toes should point, and bending the elbows so the chest sinks between the shoulders. The floor is not shown and the figure is a jointed wooden model, so tension along the inner thighs is something you add from knowledge rather than copy from the image.

Use it for stretching breaks, gymnastics and dance warm-ups, flexibility studies, or a character lounging on the floor while gazing at the sky or a ceiling. Open Edit this pose and rotate the head forward to look down the line of one leg; the figure then shifts from a relaxed lean into the start of a side stretch.
