How to draw the Lifting a Heavy Box pose

There is no box in the image, so begin by putting one there. Sketch it between the knees, low to the floor, and check that the hands land under its lower side edges. The box's width sets the spacing of the hands; if the hands sit closer together than the box is wide, the drawing is lying. Keep the box near the shins too, since a load held far out in front would pull the figure over.

The legs do the lifting. The feet stand apart, the knees bend and push out over the toes, and the hips sit back as if reaching for a seat behind. The back stays flat, a straight plank inclined forward from the hips, and the head lifts with the gaze held forward, not dropped to the floor. Both arms hang straight down from the shoulders to the box. With the centre of mass down at about 77 cm, the stance has to be wide and stable.

The side view is the critical angle: it shows the flat back as one straight line and the angle between thigh and torso. The front view shows the knees pushing out and the arms framing the box. The three-quarter view reads best for illustration, the high angle reveals hand placement from above, while a camera near the floor makes the load look heavy and the effort heroic.

Avoid a rounded back over straight legs, which turns a lift into a stoop, hands set too close together, and a box that drifts away from the body. Effort comes from details you add yourself, such as a set jaw or tight forearms. Use the figure for moving-day scenes, warehouse and workplace illustration, strength gags in comics, or as a squat study. In the editor, straighten the knees partway and raise the torso to get the next frame of the lift, with the imagined box now at hip height.
