How to draw the Star Jump pose

Start the drawing with a single X centred on the navel. Each arm and each leg follows one stroke of that X, with the head as the fifth point, so the figure becomes a five-point star. The limbs stay straight from root to tip: no bend at the elbows, no bend at the knees, feet extended into points. The chest opens and the head lifts, and because the body is symmetrical you can block in one side and mirror it.

The mannequin is airborne, 38 cm above the floor, which lifts the head to about 192 cm and the centre of mass to about 142 cm. That gap is what sells the jump. Leave clear air between the toes and the ground and drop a soft shadow on the floor below; without it the same figure reads as someone standing with legs apart. A shadow that is smaller and lighter than the footprint would be suggests more height.

The front and back views show the star cleanly and are the ones to use for icons, posters and fitness diagrams. The side view collapses the X into a near-vertical line, because arms and legs spread in one plane, so it is mainly useful for checking that the body is not leaning. The three-quarter view keeps the star readable while adding depth, and the low angle makes the leap look higher and more triumphant. The high angle shrinks the gap under the feet, so lean on the shadow there.

When checking your drawing, look for legs spread wider than the arms, which makes the figure bottom-heavy, bent elbows that break the clean lines, and feet flexed upward instead of pointed. The other giveaway is a figure with no space beneath it at all. The pose suits a goal celebration, graduation day, cheerleading, a playground scene, a New Year countdown or a step in a workout infographic. In Edit this pose, break the symmetry by raising one arm higher and bending the opposite knee a little; the jump instantly feels spontaneous rather than drilled. Lowering the figure to the floor and narrowing the stance gives you the grounded phase of a jumping jack.
