How to draw the Soccer Kick pose
The ball has already gone. This is the instant after the instep strike, when the right leg keeps travelling up and across the front of the body, long through the knee with the toes still pointed. No ball is modelled, so place it in your drawing well ahead of the foot, flying toward wherever the eyes are looking.
Everything else is counterbalance. The planted left leg is slightly bent, absorbing the swing, and it carries all of the weight. The torso leans back a little and twists with the leg, which keeps the centre of mass over the standing foot as the heavy kicking leg swings forward. The arms fling wide: the left arm forward and out, the right arm back, opening the chest like a tightrope walker's pole. The head follows the shot, eyes fixed on the ball's path.
When the pose goes wrong, it is usually one of three things. A kicking leg drawn bent at ball height freezes the moment of impact rather than the follow-through and loses the sweeping arc. Arms dangling by the sides drop the balance story and make the player look about to fall. A torso pitched forward over the ball contradicts the lean that a high follow-through forces. The front view shows the leg crossing the body and the wide spread of the arms; the side view shows the backward lean against the raised leg; the three-quarter and low angles give the most energetic sports-poster version.
Football club art, match illustrations, children's book sports scenes and animation key poses for a goal all start here. In Edit this pose, lower the kicking leg to hip height for a low drive, or swing it higher and further across for a volley, and mirror the figure to make a left-footed player.
