The right leg lies on its outer side with the shin running across the front, and the left knee rests on top of it, so both feet trail off to the figure's left. That puts the seat on the right hip and the torso leaning gently toward the right arm, which runs straight down to a flat palm beside the hip and takes part of the weight. Opposite it, the left elbow hangs low in front of the chest and the forearm rises almost vertically to a hand against the left cheek. The head tilts into that hand, the opposite way from the body's lean, giving a soft S through the figure.

From the front, the upright left forearm crossing the chest is the strongest single shape, cutting the torso in half. The three-quarter view, from the figure's front-left, shows the palm against the cheek most clearly. The side view stacks the folded legs and places the forearm in front of the face. From behind, the swept shins stretch away to one side while the propping arm sits on the other, which makes the asymmetry of the base easy to measure.

More on angles and common mistakes

Resist putting the left elbow on a knee; it hangs free in front of the body here. A hand spread across the face hides the features, while leaning the full head weight into the palm changes a light rest into a slump. Keep the knees stacked rather than letting them splay apart, and keep the propping arm straight.

As a hand on cheek sitting pose it carries daydreaming, listening, mild boredom or a wistful look out of an imagined window. It works in a picnic scene, a portrait on a rug, or a manga panel where a character waits. Edit this pose: slide the left hand down until the knuckles rest under the chin, and the mood shifts from dreamy to thoughtful.
