How to draw the Walking pose

A walking pose freezes one moment of the gait cycle, and choosing the right moment decides whether the figure looks like it is moving or merely standing with its legs apart. This reference shows the passing contact phase: the left leg swings forward with the heel about to strike, while the right leg trails behind, its knee bent and toes pushing off the ground. The arms swing in opposition to the legs, so the right arm comes forward as the left leg leads.

That counter-swing is the heart of the pose. The hips rotate one way and the shoulders the other, which twists the ribcage slightly against the pelvis. If you draw the shoulders square to the viewer while the legs stride, the figure turns stiff and robotic. Exaggerate the twist a little in a sketch, then pull it back.

Look at the line from the back heel through the hip to the head; in a natural walk the body leans only a couple of degrees forward, far less than in a run. In a live walk the pelvis also dips a little on the side of the swinging leg; this reference keeps the hips level, so add that dip when you draw. The forward forearm bends more than the trailing one, and both hands stay relaxed.

Common mistakes include putting both feet flat on the ground, making the stride too long and forgetting that the back foot bends at the toes. Check the side view in the multi-angle thumbnails: the gap between the feet is roughly one foot length for a casual pace.

Walking poses are essential for comics, storyboards, animation key frames and street scenes. Use this one as a key pose, then open it in the editor to build the in-betweens: lower the back heel, bring the legs together for the passing position, or lengthen the stride for a brisk, determined walk.
