How to draw the Sneaking on Tiptoe pose
Animators love this one because it reads from across a room. The silhouette is a forward-leaning question mark: knees bent, hips low, head pushed out ahead of the chest and eyes fixed on wherever the character is creeping. The front foot touches down on its toes only, as if testing a creaky floorboard, and the back heel is lifted too, so neither foot is flat. That double tiptoe is what sells the quiet.
The arms bend at the elbows and the hands rise to chest height, close to the body, with the wrists dropped so the fingers dangle. It is a held, careful gesture; the hands look as if they are trying not to touch anything. Keep the elbows tucked and the hands near the breastbone. Weight balances over the bent legs with the centre of mass well below standing height, and the forward push of the head is offset by the hips sitting back.
Most failed sneaks are too upright, which turns the character into someone simply walking. Flat feet kill the tiptoe instantly, and hands held far out in front look like a sleepwalker rather than a burglar. Exaggerate rather than soften: deeper knees and a longer neck read better than realism in this gesture.
Profile is the hero angle, showing the full curve of the back, the jutting head and the toe contact. A three-quarter turn gives the bent knees volume, while the front view foreshortens the forward head and is good practice for hands overlapping the chest. The high angle suits a character creeping down a corridor seen from above, and from behind you can see exactly how high the rear heel lifts. Use it for comedy, heist and stealth gags, timing studies, or as one key in a sneak cycle. In the editor, swap which foot leads and push the head a little further forward to build the next key pose.
