How to draw the Catwalk Strut pose

The whole runway look comes from one placement. The stepping foot lands directly in front of the back foot, on a single imaginary line, instead of on its own track. Because the feet line up, the pelvis has to swing toward the standing leg to stay balanced, and that hip sway is what the eye reads as attitude. Above the waist the opposite happens: the shoulders stay back, level and quiet, so the upper body glides while the lower body swings. The arms hang close to the sides and move only a little. The chin is lifted and the neck long.

When you draw it, start with a line for the runway and put both feet on it. Then tilt the hip line clearly, high on the standing-leg side, and keep the shoulder line nearly horizontal; the contrast between those two lines is the pose. The front view is the best test, because the crossed feet and the tilted pelvis are both easy to see, and the back view repeats the sway through the buttocks and shoulder blades. The profile, figure facing left, is less dramatic but useful for checking posture: ear, shoulder and hip should stack with no forward hunch. The low angle lengthens the legs the way fashion photographers like.

Failed versions usually make one of three slips. The feet land on two tracks, which looks like someone walking to the shops. The upper back rounds, as if the model is watching her feet. Or the arms pump like a jogger's; keep them small and loose.

Fashion illustration, model turnarounds, a character making an entrance at a party, a villain's slow approach or an idol's stage walk all start here. The mannequin has no clothing, so add the skirt or coat yourself and let the hem swing opposite to the hips. To push it further in the editor, increase the hip tilt and lift the back heel off the floor for a more stylised strut.
