Both arms bend toward the waist and place the hands near the sides of the pelvis. The elbows point outward, creating two compact triangular gaps beside the rib cage. Below them, the legs spread into a wider triangle, so the upper and lower silhouettes repeat related shapes at different scales. The head remains comparatively centered and the chest faces forward. This is a useful study of a deliberately open stance: it relies less on a dramatic spine curve than on the distances between elbows, hips and feet. Even small asymmetries can prevent the pose from becoming mechanically mirrored.

Draw a line between the ankle positions before deciding how wide to make the pelvis. A broad stance should come from the legs angling outward, not from stretching the hip block until it becomes anatomically implausible. Front views show the paired elbow gaps most clearly; side views expose the bend in each forearm and whether the wrists sit on the waist or drift behind it. A rear three quarter view can help identify the difference between shoulder width and elbow width. The wooden reference uses simplified palms, so it marks hand placement without promising individual fingers pressed into a hip or clothing gathered beneath them.

More on angles and common mistakes

Watch for knees drawn straight ahead while their feet point strongly outward, creating a disconnected-looking lower chain. Another mistake is making the elbows so high that the hands no longer appear to rest naturally at the waist. This reference suits assertive character introductions, neutral-to-confident comparison sheets and construction exercises with paired negative spaces. Choose Edit this pose and narrow the distance between the feet while keeping both hands in place. The attitude will become less expansive without losing the recognizable waist gesture. Review the weight distribution afterward and decide whether to preserve the centered pelvis or add a small shift for a less formal stance.
