The pelvis drops between the legs instead of sitting on the ground behind them. Both knees open outward, giving the low stance a broad, angular frame. One elbow bends upward so its hand approaches the chin, while the other arm descends toward the space between the feet. The head inclines toward the lifted hand and the chest leans forward. These differences keep the pose active despite its compact height. Notice that the knees are not simply two circles beside the torso: each connects an outward thigh to a returning shin, and those separate directions build the squat.

Begin with the two foot locations and the low pelvis center. From there, position the knees before fitting the chest into the space above the thighs. A front view makes the outward knee spread clear; side angles reveal how far the torso leans and how the ankles fold. A three quarter view is particularly helpful for distinguishing the chin arm from the nearer knee. The wooden model uses simple jointed hands, so the raised palm indicates a chin-side contact without describing exact finger pressure. The lowered hand similarly suggests a groundward gesture rather than documenting a precise load-bearing support on the floor.

More on angles and common mistakes

Do not straighten one knee accidentally while trying to reveal a hidden calf, or the figure will become a half-kneeling pose. Another frequent error is drawing the pelvis so high that the squat loses its compressed character. This reference can guide observing characters, low-angle scene planning and studies of the spaces between deeply bent limbs. In Edit this pose, turn the head a little away from the raised hand while keeping that wrist near the cheek. The figure can appear to notice something off to one side. Inspect the frontal silhouette afterward to preserve a small readable opening between the face, forearm and nearest shoulder.
