The legs point straight ahead from the pelvis, side by side with the knees barely bent and the heels down, so the lower body stays calm and symmetrical. All the energy is above the waist. The trunk leans back and slightly to the right, its weight running down a straight right arm to the palm on the floor. The left hand sits on the waist with the elbow flared out, making a bent wing on the free side. Then the neck extends: the head tips back and rolls toward the right shoulder, over the support arm, opening the throat, and the eyes look upward. The diagonal from the planted palm to the lifted chin carries the main line of action across the figure.

Draw the head angle early, because it decides how the neck and shoulders are built. In the front view the chin rises and the face foreshortens as it leans toward the planted arm; place the eyes high on a tilted ellipse. The three-quarter view from the front left shows the flared elbow against the raised face. From the figure's left side the reclined spine and the extended neck form a long gentle curve, and the legs stretch away flat. The back view shows the lean toward the support arm. The low angle is the most dramatic, looking up at the raised chin and the underside of the jaw.

More on angles and common mistakes

Do not let the neck fold sharply at its base; the backward tip is spread between neck and head. Pulling the elbow in against the ribs or sliding the hand onto the thigh flattens the attitude. Because the legs face forward rather than sweeping to one side, the lean must come from the torso, so keep that support arm locked. The wooden mannequin has no hair or clothing; a ponytail falling back or sunlight on the face are yours to add.

This works for festival, rooftop and beach scenes, a character catching the first rain or the sun, confident fashion poses and studies of an upturned head. In Edit this pose, bend the left knee up with the foot flat and rest the waist hand on it for a looser variant.
