The left leg folds in front of the body with the knee out to the side, so the shin lies across the floor and the outer thigh takes part of the weight. The right leg lifts straight up from the hip, knee locked and foot pointed, and the right hand holds it at the ankle with the arm stretched along the leg. To make room for that vertical leg, the torso leans back and the left arm props it, palm flat on the floor behind the hip. The head tips back, the face turned up toward the raised foot. The sitting bones, the folded leg and the supporting hand make a wide triangular base, with the head about 66 cm above the floor.

Looking at the front view, the lifted leg and the reaching arm form one tall vertical on the figure's right, while the support arm makes a diagonal on the left side. That asymmetry is the heart of the sitting leg raise pose. The side view from the figure's left shows how far the torso tilts back and how the support arm straightens to hold it. The back view reveals the lean and the propping hand clearly, while the lifted leg hides partly behind the head. The high angle shows the folded shin and where it crosses in front of the pelvis.

More on angles and common mistakes

A bent lifted knee, a hand at the calf instead of the ankle, and an upright torso that leaves no space for the leg are the usual errors. The support hand should sit behind and slightly outside the hip, not directly under the shoulder. There is no mat under the figure and the floor itself is left out; place the folded shin and the propping palm on the same plane when you draw it.

It suits dance floor work, stretching routines, gymnastics conditioning and flexibility studies. In Edit this pose, bend the raised knee and bring the foot toward the chest for an easier hold, or lift the support hand off the floor to test how far the torso can lean before it needs it.
