How to draw the Seated Back Arch pose

three-quarter view
side view
back view
high-angle view
The arms trail backward from the shoulders to low hand positions, making them an important part of the seated silhouette rather than incidental appendages. Between that support and the pelvis, the chest lifts and the head tips upward. The knees remain bent in front, with the feet gathered nearer the seated body than they would be in a long-legged recline. Read the gesture through its two opposing curves: the torso opens backward while the thighs rise forward. Their meeting at the pelvis creates the sense of a deliberate arch rather than a figure simply falling behind its seat.
Profile views are especially instructive here. They show how far the shoulders move behind the hips and how the arms connect to the low hands. Mark those three landmarks before adding a smooth back contour. A rear three quarter angle exposes the separation between the palms and the pelvis, while the front reveals whether the knees remain individually readable. The wooden figure describes the pose with rigid segments and rounded joints; it does not provide a detailed map of spinal articulation or demonstrate how much pressure a human wrist can take. Treat the arch as a visual construction study rather than a flexibility instruction.
More on angles and common mistakes
A common error is tipping the head back while leaving the chest collapsed, which removes the lifted quality of the whole gesture. Another is placing the wrists too close to the hips for the apparent arm length. This reference works for dramatic floor silhouettes, resting characters looking upward and comparisons of open versus closed torso shapes. Use Edit this pose to reduce the head tilt without lowering the chest. The figure can then appear attentive rather than absorbed in the upward arch. Review the side view again, keeping the neck continuous with the upper torso and preserving a believable shoulder-to-hand path behind the seated pelvis.
