How to draw the Reaching Lunge pose

Trace a single stroke from the back heel to the reaching fingertips. That stroke is the line of action, and here the whole body lies along it: the straight right leg, the pelvis, the leaning spine, the right shoulder and the outstretched right arm. When a figure feels dynamic, it is usually because a line like this runs through it uninterrupted. Draw that line first, fast, and hang the forms on it afterwards.

The legs make the base of the diagonal. The left knee bends deeply in front while the right leg extends straight behind, heel lifted so the weight rests on the toes, and the pelvis drops low between them. The right arm reaches forward and up past the head, and the reach has to start at the shoulder: the shoulder blade slides around the ribcage and the arm lengthens as a whole. The left arm sweeps back, roughly opposite the reach, balancing the figure and adding a second, shorter counter-line.

Three mistakes kill the energy. Bending the back leg shortens the line and makes the figure look like it is sitting into the lunge. Folding at the hips, so the torso changes direction from the back leg, snaps the stroke in two. And reaching from the elbow while the shoulder stays parked leaves the arm looking short and timid. The side view lays the full diagonal across the frame and is best for checking the line. The front and low angles foreshorten the reaching arm toward you, and the back view shows the shoulder blade wrapping around the ribcage as the arm extends.

Gesture drawing sessions, a hero grabbing a falling friend, a dancer at full extension or a character lunging for a closing door all use this shape. In Edit this pose, raise the reaching hand higher to steepen the diagonal, or lower it to shoulder height for a flatter grab, and keep the back heel, hip and hand on one curve.
