How to draw the Falling Backward pose

Balance is the whole story. Drop a plumb line from the centre of mass, about 69 cm off the floor, and it lands well behind the supporting foot, outside the base of support. Nothing can hold that position, which is exactly why the viewer reads the figure as falling rather than leaning. The body tilts back as one long block from heel to head, and the head itself has dropped to roughly 108 cm.

The rest of the body is reacting. The free leg kicks up in front, the arms fly up and forward with the fingers spread wide, and the chin tucks toward the chest. Those are reflexes: reaching forward tries to drag the weight back over the foot, and the tucked chin protects the back of the skull from the floor. A head thrown back may look dramatic, but it reads as wrong to anyone who has actually slipped.

The side view is the clearest diagram, showing the lean angle, the distance between heel and hips, and the forward reach of arms and kicking leg. From the front, the kicked foot and the hands come straight at the camera, so the sole becomes a large shape and the forearms foreshorten into short cylinders over a receding torso. The low angle feels like a slip on ice in a film. The high angle turns the startled face toward the viewer with the floor behind it, and the back view is almost all back and shoulders tipping toward you.

Two mistakes drain the energy out of it. Keeping the weight over the feet turns the fall into a lean, and relaxed hands with a calm face remove the surprise, so spread the fingers and widen the eyes. The pose suits slapstick slips, a character knocked back by a punch or a blast, someone tripping over an obstacle that the image does not show, or a person shoved from the front. In Edit this pose, rotate the whole figure further back and lift the supporting heel off the floor to move a moment later in the fall, just before the hips meet the ground.
