Offering a Hand Pose Reference

Only one of the two people is here. The wooden mannequin plays the helper; the partner being pulled up off the ground or asked to dance is not in the image, so you supply them, either from imagination or by mirroring a second figure in the editor and placing it across from the first. Keeping that missing person in mind is what makes the gesture convincing, because everything in the body points at them.

The step does the heavy lifting. The left foot moves out in front, the front knee softens, and the hips travel forward over it so the centre of mass shifts toward the partner. The torso follows with a slight lean, and the head drops to look at the open hand rather than at the horizon. Read from the back heel to the crown, the figure forms a soft forward-tilted arc, not a vertical post.

The right arm should feel offered, not thrust. Keep a small bend in the elbow, turn the forearm so the palm faces up, and let the fingers open in a loose curve. A locked straight arm reads as a stop sign or a robot. The other common failure is a figure standing upright with its weight still on the back leg, which makes the reach look reluctant. The side view is the quickest check for both problems: you can see the elbow angle and whether the head sits ahead of the back foot. The three-quarter and high-angle views show how far the hand travels into the gap between the two characters.

Romance and wedding illustration, ballroom scenes, rescue moments in comics and the friendly beat where one character helps another stand all grow out of this.
