How to draw the Waving Hello pose
The hand is the point of the whole figure, so build it first. The right arm lifts sideways and bends at the elbow, bringing the open hand up next to the head with the palm turned toward the viewer. Spread the fingers slightly and let the thumb angle away from them; a wave is a moment of motion, and small gaps between fingers suggest it far better than a closed, flat shape. The wrist sits roughly above the elbow, so the forearm stands close to vertical.
Below the hand, the body stays easy. Weight shifts onto the left leg, lifting the left hip a touch, while the right leg relaxes and the left arm hangs loose. The head tilts toward the waving hand, closing the gap between ear and palm and giving the gesture its warmth. Because the raised arm pulls the right shoulder up, shoulder line and hip line tilt in opposite directions, which keeps the stance from going rigid.
Rotate through the views and watch the palm change shape. From the front it is fully open and easiest to read. The three-quarter view turns it into a foreshortened plane, the best study here for anyone who struggles with hands at an angle. In profile the palm becomes a thin edge and the distance between elbow and ribs is obvious. Seen from behind, the right shoulder blade slides upward as the arm rises, and a camera placed low makes the greeting feel big and welcoming.
Three errors come up again and again: a hand drawn as a flat paddle with fused fingers, a waving elbow clamped against the ribs, and a square, symmetrical body that looks like it is taking an oath. Reach for this figure for comic greetings, mascots, friendly app illustrations, and storyboards of arrivals and farewells. In the editor, raise the elbow higher and straighten the arm for a big across-the-street wave, or bend the wrist to tip the palm into a quick, shy hello.
