How to draw the Lying on Stomach pose

The figure rests on three areas: the forearms, laid flat on the floor in front, the front of the pelvis, and the thighs. The shoulders stack directly over the elbows like two short pillars, which lets the upper back lift and the lower back sink into an arch. The head rises at the top of that curve, chin up as if reading a page on the floor. Behind, the knees bend and the shins rise off the floor, the ankles crossing in the air. Seen whole, the line of action is a shallow rocking curve, low at the hips and climbing at both ends. The head is only about 42 cm off the floor and the centre of mass about 21 cm.

The side view explains the pose best: you can read the arch from pelvis to head, the stack of shoulder over elbow, and the angle at the knee. From the front, foreshortening takes over. The head and hands are nearest the camera, the torso recedes behind them, and the crossed feet pop up above the back, small and far away. The back view flips that, with the soles and crossed ankles large in the foreground and the head tiny beyond the shoulders. The high angle maps the figure on the floor and is the easiest one for planning a room layout around it.

Push the elbows too far forward and the shoulders drop behind them, flattening the chest toward the floor and making the pose look strained. A flat lower back loses the relaxed sway that makes the figure feel comfortable. Shins drawn bolt upright on a stiff hinge, with no angle at the knee to play with, look mechanical, and legs left flat on the floor remove the playful kick at the end.

It is a natural choice for reading, scrolling a phone, sketching on a pad, a slumber party, a lazy afternoon on a rug or a children's book illustration. The book, phone and floor texture are not part of the image, so place them between the forearms yourself. In Edit this pose, uncross the ankles and swing one shin higher than the other for a restless, cheerful feel, or lift the forearms and bring the hands under the chin for a daydreaming variation.
