The right upper arm drops close to the body, the elbow bends sharply, and the forearm climbs diagonally across the chest so the hand reaches the middle of the face. The index finger points straight up with its pad against the lips; the middle, ring and little fingers curl into the palm and the thumb tucks against them, so the hand below the finger is a small closed knot under the chin. The left elbow bends backward and that hand tucks behind the lower back, where the front view shows only the bent elbow beside the waist. The head tilts slightly to the figure's left, away from the raised hand. Weight sits on the right leg; the legs are posed but outside the waist-up frame.

The finger runs vertically across the lower face, so keep it on the centre line of the head; any drift sideways makes it look like a pointing or counting hand. The mannequin has no mouth, so mark imagined lips about a third of the way up from the chin and let the fingertip land there. Overlap the folded knuckles in front of the jaw. From the front the forearm cuts a diagonal across the chest. The three-quarter view shows the hand partly overlapping the side of the face. The side view, from the figure's left, puts the raised finger on the far side of the profile, while the back view reveals the left hand tucked against the lower back. The high angle shortens the forearm toward the chin; the low angle shows the finger rising in front of the nose.

More on angles and common mistakes

Common faults are a finger hovering in front of the mouth, a finger angled sideways, an elbow lifted out to the side, and a tucked hand that pokes out past the hip in front. The finger on lips pose is useful for secret-keeping scenes, mystery covers, library or theatre signs and characters asking for silence.

In Edit this pose, bend the head forward a few degrees and turn it slightly toward the raised hand. The gesture becomes more conspiratorial, as if the figure is sharing a secret with the viewer.
