Read the pair as a V opened toward the viewer: the feet stand a short step apart and the heads meet at the point. The first person keeps the weight on the right leg with the left knee loose, rests the right hand on the own hip, and leans the upper body sideways toward the partner. The head turns in, and the left hand comes up to cup the partner's cheek, elbow dropped low in front of the partner's chest. Just behind on the right, the partner stands on straight legs, bows the head down toward the first person's face, places the right hand at the first person's waist and lets the left arm hang loose.

That V gives you a gift for composition: a tall triangle of empty background between the two bodies, wide at the feet and closing at the faces. Keep it clean, because it is what tells the eye the figures are separate people. The trouble spot sits up high, where cheek, cupping hand and bowed forehead pile into one knot; decide which head is nearer and let the lifted forearm cross in front of the partner's chest to set the depth. From the front and three-quarter views both faces are visible, the side view from the first person's left stacks them almost into one, and the back view shows the partner's hand at the waist.

More on angles and common mistakes

With two 175 cm mannequins, the partner's bow does all the work of the height change. Make the first figure shorter in the editor and the cupping arm can rise more gently, or keep the heights equal and the gesture reads as a friend sharing gossip. Avoid drawing both bodies leaning in equally; one leans and one bows, and the contrast carries the mood. A whispering pose also loses its point if the mouths touch, so leave a small gap at the ear.

It suits a secret passed at a party, a theatre scene, a quiet aside in a school drama manga, or a wedding portrait between formal shots. Edit this pose: Move the partner a step further back and turn the first person's hip hand into a hand on the partner's arm.
