The figure on the back is a long, straight line: legs extended, arms at the sides, face up. The figure on the side does all the shaping. Its head rests in the hollow of the shoulder, the top arm lies across the chest with the hand near the collarbone, and the lower arm runs along the floor and curves up above the sleeper's head, like a pillow that is not there. The top knee draws up over the other person's thigh, the one leg that crosses from one body onto the other and locks the pair together.

Very little rises off the floor: the centre of mass sits about 9 cm up, so the sketch is mostly about outlines lying flat. The high angle is the only view that tells the whole story, with the arm across the chest, the curve above the head and the crossed knee all in plain sight. From the side the two figures collapse into one horizontal strip, and only the bent knee and the side-lying shoulder break it. The front and back views, taken along the floor, compress the bodies into a pile of foreshortened limbs, useful only if you want that close, sleepy crowding. Decide early which body is on top at each crossing: the knee over the thigh, the forearm over the chest, the head on the shoulder.

More on angles and common mistakes

Common errors are lifting the side-lying hip, which turns rest into effort, or floating the top arm above the chest instead of letting it lie heavy. Sleeping limbs sag; give the hands soft curls and let the shoulders roll forward. For a couple sleeping pose with more height difference, change one mannequin's height in the editor so the head fits further under the chin. The floor stands in for a bed or futon; draw sheets and pillows around the shapes, not between them.

Use it for bedroom scenes, a nap on a picnic blanket, the last page of a romance story or a calm establishing shot in film storyboards. Edit this pose: click the person on the back and turn its head toward the partner, then bend one of its arms around the partner's shoulders.
