The pelvis stays down between the feet but rocks forward, and the trunk follows it until the shoulders sit roughly above the hands. Now the weight is shared: part of it in the seat and shins, part of it travelling down two locked arms into open, splayed fingers. To keep the face forward rather than aimed at the floor, the neck extends and the head lifts. All of this makes the figure compact. The head sits about 61 cm above the floor, noticeably lower than in the upright W versions, and the whole silhouette hunches into a forward-leaning wedge.

Look at the side view first. Shoulder, palm and hip mark a triangle, with the arm as its front edge and the back as its top, and the folded legs form the floor of it. The three-quarter view shows where the hands land: slightly outside the knees and a hand's length ahead, so the arms frame the thighs. From behind, the torso nearly covers the arms while the shins fan wide on both sides. The high angle shows the broad plane of the back and the fingers spread like small fans.

More on angles and common mistakes

A bent elbow is the giveaway of a weak drawing; it makes the figure look tired or about to collapse onto the floor. Hands placed too far ahead stretch the body into a crawl, and lifting the hips off the floor changes it into kneeling on all fours. Do not let the head hang. The lifted chin is what makes the w sitting hands forward pose look alert instead of exhausted.

The posture says eager, curious or playful: a kid leaning in to look at an imagined puzzle on the rug, a character about to scramble forward, a catlike stance in a fantasy illustration. Edit this pose: lift the right hand off the floor and raise it to wave while the left arm keeps bracing, and the shoulders will tilt naturally toward the support.
