The feet sit a little wider than the hips and both knees lock straight, so the legs act as two plain columns. On top of them the pelvis tips forward: its front edge drops while its back edge rises, and the lumbar spine answers with strong extension. The ribcage lifts and travels back over the heels, keeping the centre of mass above the feet even though the waist bends sharply. Both hands slide behind the skull where imagined hair would be, and the elbows open so far that the upper arms almost continue the line of the collarbones. The head stays upright, cradled by the palms rather than pulled.

Only the profile reveals how much is happening. Seen from the figure's left, the back contour forms a concave arc from the sacrum to the shoulder blades, while the front contour runs as one long convex line from the hip joint to the sternum. From the front that arch flattens out and the figure can look merely upright, so rely on overlaps: the lifted ribcage partly hides the waist, and the forearms frame the head as a wide diamond. The low-angle view lengthens the legs and sets the elbows against the top of the frame; the high angle compresses the torso and shows the forearms meeting behind the skull.

More on angles and common mistakes

Common mistakes include bending the knees to fake the curve, which moves the arch into the legs; bringing the elbows forward around the face, which closes the chest; and curving the spine while leaving the pelvis level, so the arch has no root. The pose is useful for waking-up and stretch scenes, dance warm-ups and studies of spinal extension, and anyone searching for a standing back arch hands in hair pose usually needs that side view first.

In Edit this pose, select the pelvis and reduce its forward tilt by about half. The back arch softens into a neutral stance while the raised elbows keep their wide, open frame.
