How to draw the Side-Lying Leg Raise pose

three-quarter view
side view
back view
high-angle view
The base is the bottom arm and leg. The right elbow is on the floor with the head cradled in the right hand, and the right leg lies long, continuing the line of the torso. The left leg rises from the hip almost vertically with the knee straight, and the left arm travels up to grip the ankle, so arm, leg and torso enclose a tall, narrow triangle. To reach that far the upper body rolls slightly back, turning the chest partly toward the ceiling. With the centre of mass around 22 cm high and a long base on the floor, the side lying leg raise pose asks for flexibility more than balance.
The front view gives the clearest read: a horizontal body with one vertical leg rising from the hip like a mast. Check the proportion there, because the lifted leg should be close to the length of the torso plus head. The side view from the figure's left looks along the body from the head end, so the raised leg comes forward in strong foreshortening. The back view shows the reaching arm passing behind the leg, and the low angle lets the leg dominate the frame.
More on angles and common mistakes
Bending the top knee is the first thing to avoid; it shortens the leg and moves the grip to the shin. Others are letting the bottom leg drift forward and bend, rolling all the way onto the back, and folding the supporting wrist flat so the head seems to sit on a fist. The mannequin's hand is a simple clamp, so draw the fingers wrapping around the ankle bone.
Use the reference for side-lying flexibility routines, gymnastics and dance warm-ups, Pilates leg series and compositions that need one strong vertical inside a horizontal frame. In Edit this pose, let go of the ankle, rest that hand on the floor in front of the chest and lower the leg to about 45 degrees for a classic side-lying abduction exercise. The render omits the floor, and mirroring the figure moves it onto the left side.
