Almost the whole body is a single plank on the floor. The chest, belly, front of the hips and thighs all take weight, the legs lie straight and together, and the feet point back with their tops on the ground. Only the front end has structure: both elbows spread out to the sides, the forearms fold in toward each other in front of the head, and the hands lie open just in front of the face. The neck bends so the face drops onto that low platform of forearms, lifting the head to about 21 cm, a little higher than the shoulders. Nothing is held up by effort; it is a body letting go.

The views split clearly. From the high angle you see the figure as a long narrow stem crowned by a wide diamond of arms, the most readable silhouette and the one to start from. The front camera faces the crown, so the head sits in the middle of a broad frame of elbows and the legs vanish behind it. Seen in profile from the figure's left, the body is almost a flat line; it is the place to check that the shoulders sit only slightly above the floor and that the heels are not lifted. The back view, from beyond the feet, is mostly soles and calves with the elbows peeking out beyond the shoulders.

More on angles and common mistakes

Keep the elbows wide. Pulling them in under the chest turns the gesture into a push-up or a sphinx, and the head starts to look alert instead of asleep. Make sure the face meets the forearms rather than hovering above them, and that the forearms stay on the floor. A frequent error is bending the knees and lifting the shins for variety; that belongs to a different, more playful pose.

Good for sunbathing scenes on an imagined towel, a student asleep on a library floor, a character exhausted at the end of the day, or a massage-table composition you build around it. In Edit this pose, turn the head to one side so the cheek rests on the arms, then raise one knee slightly outward along the floor for the classic recovery-style sleeper.
