The feet sit wider than the shoulders and the hips slide back behind them, so the torso tips forward from the hip joints instead of curling at the waist. The right knee bends a little more than the left and takes most of the weight. On top of it the right hand rests on the front of the thigh just above the kneecap, the arm almost straight, a strut that stops the chest from sinking further. The left hand goes to the left hip with the fingers forward, and its elbow points out and back behind the body. Because the trunk is inclined, the neck extends to keep the face level: the chin lifts and the gaze runs straight forward.

Two arm shapes carry the drawing, so block them in as a pair: one straight brace slanting down to the knee, one triangle opened by the elbow at the waist. The side view from the figure's left shows the true lean, with the head forward of the toes and the seat behind the heels. In the front view that incline is foreshortened and the torso looks almost upright, so judge the angle from the profile instead. The back view puts the bent left elbow nearest to you, and the high angle squeezes the back into a short wedge behind the head.

More on angles and common mistakes

Keep the spine fairly long. Rounding it into a hunch reads as exhaustion rather than the alert, coach-like attitude of this leaning forward hand on hip pose. Check that the bracing palm actually meets the thigh instead of hovering in front of it, and that the knee beneath bends enough to accept the push. The mannequin wears no clothing, so any waistband or belt the left hand might grip has to be imagined.

Use it for a sports coach on the sideline, a hiker pausing on a slope while still watching the trail ahead, or someone leaning in to hear a child. In Edit this pose, move the left hand from the hip down to the left thigh to match the right and the figure becomes a symmetrical rest; or turn the head toward the braced knee for a sideways glance.
