How to draw the Crouch, Hand in Hair pose

three-quarter view
side view
back view
high-angle view
Where many squats fold forward, this one stays tall from the waist up. The hips drop close to the heels, which lift a little so the weight rides on the front of the feet, and the knees stay together, pointing straight ahead. Above that compact base the spine rises nearly vertical. The right arm lifts out to the side with the elbow above shoulder level, and the hand slides into imagined hair at the side of the head, just above the ear. The left forearm lies across the top of the left knee with the hand hanging over it. The head tilts slightly sideways, giving the face a soft, thoughtful angle.
The two arms carry the design. From the front they make an uneven frame: a high triangle of elbow, wrist and head on one side, a low hook over the knee on the other. The profile from the figure's left shows the stacked geometry cleanly, with shins slanting forward, thighs close to horizontal, an upright torso on top and the raised elbow pushed back behind the line of the face. Use the back view to confirm that the right elbow really travels out to the side and not forward. The high angle compresses the torso over the knees and turns the raised arm into a strong diagonal, while the low angle makes the figure feel taller and more self-assured.
More on angles and common mistakes
Watch the hand at the head. It belongs at the side of the skull, not on top of the crown and not behind the neck. The wooden figure has no hair to show the contact, so leave the fingers slightly open and let the palm meet the head near the ear. Leaning the trunk forward is the other usual slip; it turns a composed fashion crouch into a tired slump. Keep the knees touching and the heels tucked close under the seat.
Editorial and fashion shots, album-cover portraits, a character waiting at a curb or a held beat between dance moves all lean on this crouch. In Edit this pose, lower the raised elbow forward so the hand cups the back of the head; the same squat then reads as worried rather than relaxed.
