The two figures play different roles. One sits upright and leans back a little onto the straight outer arm, palm flat on the floor behind the hip, which props the torso like a tent pole. The outer knee drops open with that shin folded across the front, and the inner leg lies low beside it. The partner sits pressed against their side with both knees drawn up, rests the inner shin over the first person's folded leg, and holds the offered hand in both hands where it lies on the partner's own inner thigh. The partner's head tilts down toward the clasped hands, so the gaze leads the eye straight to the centre of the picture.

Treat the joined hands as the focal knot and build everything around them. Four legs meet in the middle, so sort out the stacking before you shade: the partner's inner shin lies on top, the folded leg passes beneath, and the open knee sits outermost. The upper arms touch from shoulder to elbow, and that seam is where the two silhouettes merge; a thin shadow line keeps them apart. From the front and three-quarter views the hands are clear; the back view turns the pair into two rounded backs with the propping arm angled out, and the high angle explains the leg tangle best.

More on angles and common mistakes

Drawings of a couple sitting pose often keep a polite gap between the hips, which loses the closeness; here the pelvises almost touch. Another slip is bending the propping elbow, which drops the shoulder and makes the upright figure look tired. Both mannequins sit at the same 175 cm scale, so the shoulders line up evenly; set one figure shorter in the editor if you want one head to rest lower.

There is no rug, sand or grass in the image, only the floor shadow, so the setting is yours: a picnic, a beach at sunset, a rooftop, a dorm room floor. Edit this pose: select the partner, Move it a hand's width away and straighten its inner leg, and the scene relaxes into two friends chatting.
