The weight is shared between the straight left leg and the two palms, which sit flat on the floor just in front of the standing foot. The hips stack above that foot, the spine hangs down from them, and the head drops toward the shin, only about 36 cm above the floor. The right leg rises from the back of the pelvis and continues the line of the inverted torso, toes pointed, so torso and lifted leg form one long spoke with the standing leg branching off it. The centre of mass sits low, around 66 cm, close to the hands.

The side view from the figure's left explains the standing split pose best: you see the long line from the hanging head up to the raised toes and the narrow wedge of space between the standing leg and that line. The front view is the hard one. The torso is hidden behind the hanging head and arms, and the raised leg grows out of the hips like a pole, so overlap and foreshortening do all the work. The back view shows the lifted leg straight above the pelvis with the standing leg below it, and the high angle reveals how close the hands are to the foot.

More on angles and common mistakes

Common errors include a bent standing knee, a lifted hip that rolls open so the leg swings out to the side, and hands placed far forward, which turns the shape into a downward dog. Do not draw the head floating between the arms; the neck should hang loosely, with the crown pointing at the floor. No floor appears in the render; when you draw it, set the palms and the standing foot on one shared ground line.

It works for yoga class handouts, fitness app illustrations, dancer warm-up scenes and studies of the inverted head. In Edit this pose, move both hands back to hold the standing ankle for a deeper fold, or lower the raised leg toward horizontal for an easier version.
