How to draw the Plow Pose pose

three-quarter view
side view
back view
high-angle view
Three things hold the inversion up: the back of the head, the upper arms pressing down, and the toes resting on the floor beyond the head. The pelvis sits high and almost directly above the shoulders, so the torso stands nearly vertical, and the straight legs fold from the hips at a sharp angle back over the face. On this mannequin the arms do not run parallel; they stretch along the floor away from the feet and open into a V, which widens the base and makes the pose read as a stable tripod rather than a balancing trick.
The side angle from the figure's left is where a plow pose reads instantly: a vertical trunk, a straight diagonal of leg coming down to the toes, and the arms lying on the floor in the opposite direction. Use it to measure the hip angle, which is well under ninety degrees. The front view faces the raised seat with the head below it, so the legs vanish behind the torso and the spread arms dominate. From the back you face the soles and folded legs, and the high angle shows the V of the arms most clearly.
More on angles and common mistakes
Don't bend the knees heavily unless you mean to show an easier variation; the straight legs are what make this a plow rather than a curled roll. Avoid drawing the head turned to the side or lifted, since the neck lies flat and the weight belongs on the shoulders. Another error is placing the hips behind the shoulders, which tips the whole stack over. The figure is a jointed wooden model with no mat or clothing, so if you add a shirt, remember that on an inverted body its folds fall toward the face.
Use it for yoga sequences, flexibility charts, gymnastics and dance conditioning, or as a hard foreshortening exercise in a sketchbook. In Edit this pose, bend the knees down beside the ears for the deeper knee-to-ear variation, or raise the legs to vertical for a shoulder stand and compare the two silhouettes.
