Weight in this kneeling hands on floor pose travels through three groups of contact: the knees and inner shins, which open wide and angle back toward each other behind the body; the heels, with the pelvis hovering just above them; and two straight arms dropped between the thighs with the palms flat. Because the trunk leans forward, a fair share of the load moves into the hands. The lower back keeps a slight arch instead of rounding, the shoulders stay broad over the wrists, and the head comes up to look straight ahead.

The front view is the clearest: the knees form the outer corners of a low triangle, the arms make two vertical bars inside it, and the head sits centred above the shoulder line. In the three-quarter view the near thigh overlaps the near arm, so place the hand before you draw the thigh contour. The side view from the figure's left shows the forward lean of the torso and the small gap between seat and heels, while the back view reveals the shins converging behind with the soles facing up. From the high angle the arms foreshorten into short columns.

More on angles and common mistakes

Typical slips include setting the hands outside the knees, which makes it a wide crawl, and letting the hips sink right down between the feet, which is a different and far more flexible sit. Keep the elbows straight; bent arms drop the chest and the head loses its forward gaze. The mannequin wears nothing and the floor is not shown, so the shadows under the palms and knees are your guide to the ground line.

Reach for it when a character examines something on the ground, plays a board game on the floor, studies tracks, catches their breath, or gathers to spring up. In Edit this pose, slide the hands forward and lower the chest by bending further at the hips; the figure moves toward a wide-knee child's pose with the arms reaching ahead.
