How to draw the Archer Drawing a Bow pose

One straight line holds the whole draw together. It runs from the bow hand, through the front shoulder and the back shoulder, to the point of the drawing elbow, and in a good draw it continues the line of the arrow. Keep that line level and unbroken and the archer looks strong and practised; bend it anywhere and the pose collapses.

The figure stands side-on to a target off to its left, feet about shoulder-width apart, weight even. The left arm, the bow arm, extends straight out at shoulder height toward the target. The right hand pulls the imagined string back to an anchor point at the jaw, and the right elbow is drawn back so it lines up behind the arrow. The shoulders stay down, away from the ears, which keeps the neck long. The head turns toward the target so the eye can sight along the arrow, without tilting toward the string. No bow, arrow or string is modelled; the hands are shaped for you to wrap them around.

Because the archer faces the camera while aiming sideways, the front view lays the full line of the draw across the frame and is the best for checking it. The back view shows the shoulder blades squeezing together behind the drawing arm, and the high angle reveals whether bow arm and drawing elbow really line up with the target. Typical mistakes: a drawing elbow dropped below the arrow, which looks weak, a bent bow arm, and a head cocked over toward the string.

Fantasy rangers, historical battle scenes, hunting illustrations and sports archery all use this moment. In Edit this pose, mirror it for a left-handed archer whose target is on the right, or lean the upper body back slightly to aim at a high target while keeping the bow-to-elbow line straight.
