The upper arms run down and inward until the elbows almost touch in front of the stomach, and the forearms stand up side by side to the face. At the top, both hands close into soft fists: every finger curls into the palm, the thumbs wrap across the front of the curled index and middle fingers, and the wrists bend a little so the knuckles turn toward the cheeks. The shoulders round forward, the upper back curves, and the neck and head bow down onto the fists, so the face seems to sink its weight into them. The result is closed and compact, with the arms forming a narrow column in front of the chest. The weight is on the right leg, though the legs fall outside the waist-up views.

Think of the arms as a tall, narrow prism with the head balanced on top. Draw each fist as a small cube, with the knuckle row as a stepped curve and the thumb as a wedge across it. Where fist meets jaw there should be no gap: overlap the contour so the face presses lightly into the hands. The mannequin's head is a smooth egg without cheeks, so mark where the cheekbones would be before placing the fists. From the front the forearms hide most of the torso. In the three-quarter view the near elbow overlaps the far one. The side view, from the figure's left, shows the rounded back and how far forward the elbows sit. From above the bowed crown dominates the frame with the fists peeking out beneath it; from below the forearms shorten into blocks under the chin.

More on angles and common mistakes

Watch for elbows flared wide, which reads as a boxing guard, fists hovering below the jaw, and a head held upright so nothing rests on the hands. The fists by cheeks pose works for daydreaming and waiting scenes, shy reactions, chibi art and cute character sheets.

In Edit this pose, reduce the bend in the neck and head so the chin lifts off the fists and the face looks straight at the viewer. The pose changes from dreamy to eager, and the fists then frame the face rather than hold it.
